Lake Geneva and Southern Alps Region
Despite living in a region surrounded by the Alps and the Jura, we often fail to grasp the precariousness of this stunning mountainous environment that we take for granted. The Mountain Research Initiative in Lausanne reminds us that UN International Mountain Day on 11 December 2007 is a chance to focus on the crucial importance of mountains the world over, whether the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan, the East African Highlands or the Andes in Latin America.
This year's theme Facing Change: Climate Change in Mountain Areas seeks to increase public awareness that global climate change is not just a reality, but that it has severe implications for humankind well beyond mountain areas.
