With more than 100 musical performances at 30 locations, the Fete de la Musique, which begins with a sunrise 6:00 AM concert at the Bains des Paquis this Friday and runs through Sunday, is an occasion not to miss. Not only is the Festival Geneva's premiere cultural event, but this weekend marks the Festival's 20th anniversary. To celebrate the occasion, 20 pianos have been set up around town for anyone to use when the mood strikes. To add to the festival atmosphere, 300 international dancers in costume are planning a parade on Sunday.
The musical styles range from Baroque to the blues, hip hop and reggae, along with a few fairly innovative experiments, some of them all encompassing. Brice Catherin, a cellist-composer, who is participating in five performances, was invited by Cap Loisirs to stage a performance with nearly a dozen amateurs, who normally are classified as mentally handicaped. That one will be on Saturday, June 18, at the studio Ernest Ansermet, at 3:30pm. Pakistani singer Faiz Ali Faiz will give a concert at Victorial Hall on Friday. The blues trio, Hells Kitchen, will perform Friday in front of the Mur des Reformateurs, near the ramparts. Argentine composer, Carlos Grätzer, has been commissioned to create a contemporary homage to to film director Georges Meliès. A festival of Latin American baroque music will be performed by the Elyma Ensemble at the Saint-Pierre Cathedral on Saturday.
